When we recorded him, he looked nervous, even though his words were perfect.
We focused intently on his posture. I encouraged him to sit tall, with his shoulders back, hands resting lightly on his desk, and occasionally using purposeful, open gestures to illustrate points. The transformation was remarkable. In his next mock pitch, he didn't just sound confident; he looked authoritative, engaged, and approachable. His non-verbal cues now amplified his expertise, rather than undermining it. When you project openness, you invite trust – a universal asset in international business.


2. Use Purposeful, Controlled Gestures: Enhancing Your Message
Your hands can powerfully enhance your message, but they can also distract. The key is to be purposeful. Gestures should naturally support your words, not become a show of their own. This is particularly vital when speaking in Business English across different cultural backgrounds.

If you are speaking virtually, make sure your gestures are within the camera frame to maintain your visual impact.


3. Master the "Lean In" and "Occupy Your Space": Projecting Presence
This is subtle, yet incredibly powerful. When listening intently or making a key point, a slight, genuine lean forward communicates engagement and interest. It's a non-verbal cue that says, "I'm with you," or "This is important." This subtle movement significantly boosts your perceived engagement and attentiveness. "Occupy your space" refers to sitting or standing fully, without trying to make yourself smaller. Whether it's sitting at the head of a table or positioning yourself clearly in your webcam frame during virtual meetings, project that you belong there, that you have a right to take up that space. This isn't about aggression; it's about radiating confident presence and leadership.In large group video calls, people with brilliant ideas can often get overshadowed if they hesitate or physically shrink. This is why "occupying your space" on camera is so important. Instead of leaning back, almost disappearing, sit upright, ensuring your shoulders and upper body are clearly visible. Lean slightly forward and make direct "eye contact" with the camera. It is vital to have your physical presence match the strength of your ideas, establishing your authority and credibility.
